Chennai (Formerly: Madras) has housed various theatres in the city, right from the early 60’s and 70’s. One of the oldest theatres of the city, Agsatya, will be permanently closed down from the 1st of September.

Agastya theatre, which was started in 1967 screened the movie ‘Bama Vijayam’ as its first film and has screened blockbuster movies of all the superstars of the Tamil Cinema Industry, right from MGR, Sivaji, Rajini, Kamal to the new-age stars like Ajith, Vijay and Suriya.

Agastya Theatre had been facing a substantial loss for the last 3 years and currently, with the pandemic, the owners have decided to permanently shut down the theatre. This news is indeed a sad one for most 90’s and 80’s kids of Madras, who might have fond memories of watching their favourite stars’ movies in the theatre.

Agastya Theatre had a seating capacity of 1004 and it has Bagged many Film Fans’ Association awards for the Best Maintained Non- Air Conditioned Theatre year after year.
