Kalki's epic five-book series novel - Ponniyin Selvan has been the dream project of many filmmakers over the years. The story talks about the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola.
Early in 2019, Soundarya Rajinikanth announced that she will be bringing this history to life through a web series.
Two years after the first announcement, Soundarya Rajinikanth took to social media to share that 'Puthu Vellam: Ponniyin Selvan season 1' has been locked after several hurdles. "Every project has a journey & a destiny. On this auspicious day I’m very happy to share after many hurdles - we have locked our web series PUTHU VELLAM - PONNIYIN SELVAN SEASON 1. Can’t wait for the next steps with my super talented team headed by @sharathjothi (watch out for this one) gods grace," she said.
Soundarya, who is the creative director of the series will be co-producing the under the banner May 6th Entertainment along with Mx Player. Filmmaker Sharath Kumar Jothi is working on screen play and direction for this web series which is expected to be streamed on MX Player.
Meanwhile, the shoot for the two-part movie of 'Ponniyin Selvan' is already going on at a brisk pace in multiple schedules across many cities. Mani Ratnam, who is helming this magnum-opus movie has brought in an ensemble star cast that includes Chiyaan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Trisha, Prabhu, Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Kishore, Jayaram, Lal, Rahman and many others. The first part is set to release on the big screens in 2022.
