War

Russia has strongly opposed the decision, citing Ukraine's willingness to join the European Union. Following this, President Putin presented a request to the Russian parliament for permission to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine. Post Parliament's approval, Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine on February 24.

This was followed by a fierce battle between the Russian military and Ukrainian security forces in Ukraine. The United Nations says more than a thousand people have been killed and many more injured. Ukraine also claims that 30 million people have so far sought refuge in neighboring countries as a result of the war.

Resolution

The world community has strongly condemned Russia's attack in Kiev and Bucha, Ukraine. Following this, the United States brought a resolution against Russia in the United Nations Security Council.

As many as 93 countries voted in favor of the resolution. 24 countries voted against. The resolution was thus passed. Fifty-eight countries, including India, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, abstained.

Libya, a Middle Eastern country, was previously suspended by the UN Security Council in 2011. The UN has now suspended Russia from the council.

Ukraine welcomes the success of the resolution against Russia. Similarly, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas Greenfield has said that Russia is responsible for human rights abuses in Ukraine.

Outgoing India

India abstained from voting on the resolution against Russia yesterday. The UN has so far passed eight resolutions against Russia over its war on Ukraine. It is noteworthy that India withdrew without voting on all these resolutions.
