People across the country have been protesting in the wake of the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the problem of unemployment and rising prices. So the demand for the resignation of the country's Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was strong. Following this, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa removed the family members from the Government. But he only extended his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa to become Prime Minister.
And Mahinda Rajapaksa was adamant that he would not resign. Yet the opposition did not back down from this demand. Now, supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa launched a surprise attack on peaceful protesters this morning. Violence erupted in the capital, Colombo. This was followed by a curfew.
Now, it has been announced that Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from the post of Prime Minister. It has also been reported that a Sri Lankan MP was killed in the riots.
