Watch that helped a prisoner to escape from Hitler in World War II has been auctioned off - Here's how much it costs!

During World War II, a watch sold by a soldier who helped British soldiers escape from Hitler's camp sold for more than a million rupees at auction.

It was a time when Hitler's dominance in World War II was on the rise. Huge camps were set up to house enemy soldiers and civilians captured by German forces. The warriors resorted to various tactics to avoid being trapped by German forces, as most of those who went inside would be killed. However, some British soldiers were trapped by the German army. Gerald Imeson is one such person.

Imprisonment

British soldiers were detained at Stalag Luft III, a camp located southeast of Berlin. Gerald Imeson is one of them. In March 1944, British soldiers escaped from the prison. The event is remembered in history as the Great Escape. British soldiers know the time of German soldiers' patrols and the time when soldiers rest with the help of the Imeson's clock.

Gerald Imeson decides to escape from that prison, but he is unable to do so. But 76 players escaped from prison based on a plan put in place by his watch. After the fall of Hitler, the camp was captured by Russia. Gerald Imeson was released in 1945.

Popular auction house Christie's recently announced that Gerald Imeson's Rolex watch used for the famous Great Escape project is coming up for auction. In this case, the watch was bought at an auction in New York City, USA for $ 189,000 (Rs. 1.47 crore in Indian currency).

Gerald Imeson was released from prison in 1945 and died in 2003 at the age of 85. It is noteworthy that he had been using this watch until then.
