Scientists discover an ecosystem 500 metres in an Antarctican suspected estuary?
Home > News Shots > World newsResearchers have discovered that there is an unknown world beneath Antarctica's ice sheets.
The New Zealand study team traveled to Antarctica on climate change. It was attended by the universities of Wellington, Auckland, Otago and national research institutes. They then drilled 500 meters below the ice and discovered that the habitat was located there.
Analyst Craig Stevens said, ‘Initially we thought there was something wrong with the camera. Then, when I looked closer, I could see 5 millimeters of algae-like creatures moving around. '
Commenting on this, another researcher, Hoo Hornen, said, "It is like entering a new secret world when you see and feel this river for the first time." Researchers have already noted that there are freshwater lakes beneath the ice. But very little has been researched directly about it.
The location of the river mouth was first detected on a satellite map. The organisms that live there are then equipped with tools to further study the nature of that water. Researchers also say that cats need to be included in any precautionary measures against the virus.
