Home > News Shots > World newsA USA woman is now being treated after her skin and blood turned blue, reports The gaurdian. She reportedly took a tooth ache medicine the previous night.
She reportedly applied large amounts of topical benzocaine on a tooth which was aching the previous night. It is used to numb pain.
The next day, the woman's skin had a bluish tint and blood drawn from her was deep blue in colour. It can cause iron in the blood to give up electrons, change form and no longer bind properly to oxygen.
The body relies on bonds between oxygen and iron. When it is disrupted, red blood can turn blue, and the skin and nails will also follow put.
The condition is called methemoglobinemia which suffocates tissues and causes serious damage if the blood oxygen falls below 70%.
Her levels dropped to 67% and she was soon administered methylene blue and soon her blood oxygen levels came back to normal.
