Viral VIDEO: Who is 'Anonymous'? Why are they Back on Social Media, and Threatening the World?

As the United States continues to reel from the aftermath of George Floyd’s death which took place when he was under police custody, the incident has sparked widespread protest across the country. Protesters are demanding to put an end to racial violence and inequality. #Blacklivesmatter has resurfaced on social media and is trending. 

Police, in turn have deployed extra force to deal with the protesters. Visuals of police- versus protesters are being rampantly shared in social media. 

The infamous Hacktivist, Anonymous has reemerged from the shadows after years. Anonymous has released a video to talk about George Floyd’s death. 

What do you know about Anonymous? 

Anonymous is an international group of hacker activists who do not have a single proclaimed leader. Details about the members of this group is unknown. The anonymous have launched cyberattacks against governments, institutions as well as corporations and targeted them for their wrongdoings or for misusing power. They hijack websites as well as force them offline. They are popular for conducting operations against Church of Scientology, ISIS, Arab Spring, PayPal, MasterCard and Baptist church in Kansas among others.

The group was formed in 2003 on an anonymous English- language imageboard website called 4chan. 

Their logo and videos are inspired from the book and film ‘V for Vendetta’. Reportedly, the group comprises of around 1000 members. Their motto is “We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive; we do not forget. Expect us.”

At present, the anonymous made a comeback after years and have threatened the US government that it would expose President Trump’s alleged files on Child trafficking and would also reveal details of Princess Diana’s alleged killing. 

Reportedly, within 24 hours of releasing the video, they have managed to hack the Minneapolis Police website and the Chicago Police Department’s radio systems. 

A viral tweet claimed that the Chicago Police radio systems have been hacked. With NWA’S “F*** the police” and polka music being played through police radios, everyone assumed that this is being done to prevent police from communicating to the protesters. 

Trump administration’s handling of the protest is being cited as the reason behind this re-emergence.
