The United States had pulled out of the World Health Organisation in early July as President Trump claimed that the organisation needs to be reformed. He claimed that it is heavily influenced by China. Now he has also added that the U.S. will not take part in the global effort to develop a vaccine against Covid-19.
President Trump said that the States will not be inclined towards developing and distributing a COVID-19 vaccine as part of a global effort because it does not want to be constrained by multilateral groups like the World Health Organisation.
"The United States will continue to engage our international partners to ensure we defeat this virus, but we will not be constrained by multilateral organisations influenced by the corrupt World Health Organization and China," said White House spokesman Judd Deere, on Tuesday.
"This president will spare no expense to ensure that any new vaccine maintains our own Food and Drug Administration's gold standard for safety and efficacy, and is thoroughly tested and saves lives."
Meanwhile 150 countries are setting up COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility.
This cooperative effort that is being undertaken by several countries will allow the nations to enjoy the benefit of a portfolio of potential vaccines to ensure quick recovery once one of them is deemed effective and fit.
