Russian President Valdimir Putin announced that the world’s first coronavirus vaccine has been launched. While the race to develop a vaccine has been on-going Russia had previously announced that it will register and launch the vaccine this week.
The President said, “It works quite effectively and forms a stable immunity.” He also described this to be a “very important step for the world.”
"This morning, for the first time in the world, a vaccine against the new coronavirus was registered" he was quoted saying by AFP, during a televised video conference call with government ministers. In the conference he added that the vaccine has undergone all the necessary tests.
Further his daughters received a shot of the vaccine and are feeling well, reported the Associated Press.
This vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian Defence Ministry. The registration is conditional and the trials will continue, along with production. The President has announced that 60% of Russians will be vaccinated against the flu. Initially, the vaccine will be given to those who fall under the high risk group.
Clinical trials reports suggest that all participants developed immunity. It began on June 18 and included around 38 volunteers and the second group was tested from July 20. The period of testing was shortened by Putin in order to ensure that a potential vaccine is made available as soon as possible.
