First-time: A HIV patient donates an organ, inspiring story here!

According to Indiatimes report, first time an HIV patient, Nina Martinez, a 35-year-old marathon runner from Atlanta, USA, donated her kidney to another HIV positive patient. Doctors at the Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore said both the patients are recovering well.

Marinez acquired HIV as a 6-week-old infant when she received a blood transfusion. She said the reporters that she was feeling good and excited to be part of a medical first. In the report, Dr. Dorry Segev, who removed her kidney, said: “This is the first time someone living with HIV has been allowed to donate a kidney, ever, in the world."

As HIV is known to cause kidney disease, HIV positive patients were not allowed to donate a kidney. Lately, the antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV are seen as safe for the kidney.
