If several reports in the media are true, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, has initiated a new move to overcome food supply crisis. Due to the on-going pandemic, it is believed that the North Korean economic situation has worsened.
As food shortage is becoming an increasing concern, it is being said that the leader has ordered his people to turn in their pet dogs, so that they can be killed and their meat be sold to overcome the current shortage. Reports are suggesting that the leader claims that having pet dogs is a sign of "capitalism" and "bourgeois ideology."
"Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down," the source said. "Some of the dogs are sent to state-run zoos or sold to dog meat restaurants".
Pet owners are "cursing Kim Jong-un behind his back" the source added since it is highly unlikely that they will be able to refuse their Dictator’s order. “Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment," the source told a South Korean newspaper.
Dog meat is generally consumed in Korean Peninsula and around 1 million dogs are being slaughtered for consumption. However, consumption of dog meat has reduced drastically in South Korea.
