Has China Successfully Overcome Coronavirus Pandemic? Zero Cases Reported Recently

China’s Wuhan, the epicentre of Coronavirus Pandemic did not have any COVID-19 patients on Sunday for the first time. The number of patients dropping to zero was seen as a milestone. The city re-opened on April 8 after being under a strict 76- day lockdown which was imposed to contain the virus. 

According to Xinhua news agency, a state- run media organization, the last patient in Wuhan was cured on Friday. The health commission of Hubei province said that no positive cases or deaths due to COVID-19 were reported on Saturday. 

“The result has been achieved with the ‘hard efforts of medical workers in Wuhan’ and those who were dispatched to assist the city in the fight against the virus from across the country”, said Mi Feng, a spokesperson for China's National Health Commission (NHC).

China was caught amidst a global controversy due to the delay in making announcements about the virus. The country noticed the virus in late December in Wuhan but made announcements and imposed a lockdown only from January. Since then Wuhan has been at the centre of global media’s attention. 

China also recently revised the death toll in Wuhan by 50 percent after being criticized for underreporting COVID-19 cases in the country. 

“Chinese Foreign Ministry officials said the revision was due to some late reports, omissions and inaccurate information in the initial stages,” India Today stated in its repo
