High Alert! Tsunami Warning Issued After 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Alaska
Home > News Shots > World newsIn a shocking case, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit off the Alaskan peninsula, and has triggered a tsunami warning for areas within 200 miles (300 kilometers) of the epicenter.
As per the US Geological Survey, the shallow quake hit at 0612 GMT Wednesday about 500 miles southwest of Anchorage, and around 60 miles south-southeast of the remote settlement of Perryville.
According to Express News report, the US Tsunami Warning System said tsunami activity was predicted to hit within the next hour at points along the Alaskan coast. It said Sand Point could be hit at 11.15 pm local time (8.15 am BST), Kodiak at 12.05 am (9.05 am BST) and Cold Bay at 12.15 am (9.15 am BST).
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service took to social media and said; "Impacts to the California coast are still being evaluated by the Tsunami Warning Center." Also, it is not yet know if the earthquake caused any injuries or damage to life.
