The two-day World Health Assembly (WHA) meet in Geneva is grabbing headlines after China agreed to accept a probe on COVID-19 outbreak. The reason behind it was evident as the pressure on Beijing over Taiwan’s re-entry into WHA eased for the next few months.

Hours after more than 100 countries including India backed an international investigation into the deadly coronavirus outbreak, China, said that the US and Australia, who have been demanding a probe, were politicising the issue and could stop the fight against the pandemic.

However, days ahead of WHA meet Taiwan announced it will not participate in the current Assembly.

Meanwhile, Chinese leader Xi Jinping in his speech, at the invitation of WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, signaled a growing sense of confidence on China’s part. He pledged a $2 billion in aid over two years to help other countries respond to the pandemic.

US President Donald Trump, who was also invited to speak at the assembly, declined the invitation, according to two officials, one at the WHO and one at the White House.

“We must be frank about one of the primary reasons that this outbreak spun out of control. There was a failure by this organization to obtain the information that the world needed, and that failure cost many lives," Trump said.
