The United States is not new to ‘birth tourism’, a practice where potential mothers travel to the US to give birth to their children there, so that their offsprings might have the coveted American passport. However, the Trump administration plans to clampdown on this.

According to new rules published by the Trump administration on Friday, applicants will be denied Visa, in case, consular officials can establish that they are primarily coming to the United States to give birth. They need to prove that they are coming to the US for medical aid, have sufficient resources for the same including transportation and living expenses, and not just to give birth.

Though travelling to the United States for giving birth is fundamentally legal, concerns have arisen over fraudulent birth tourism agencies and more often than not, women are also found to be not honest about their intentions.

According to the new rules, the US State Department, "Does not believe that visiting the United States for the primary purpose of obtaining US citizenship for a child, by giving birth in the United States - an activity commonly referred to as 'birth tourism' - is a legitimate activity for pleasure or of a recreational nature."
