Employees allege that the company has been firing staff in order to deal with the loss incurred due to COVID19.

The company has laid off nine employees in Bangladesh. According to reports produced by a regional news channel, at least 10 employees were asked to resign. When they denied to do so, Wipro reportedly fired them and violated the terms of agreement.

Retrenched staff have also alleged that the company has asked them to resign without any notice and has been discriminating local hires when it comes to salaries, bonuses, promotions, provident funds and gratuities.

The company denied such allegations while talking to the media and further stated that 90% of its workforce are locals. They also ensured that they’d continue to hire locally.

Wipro Spokesperson denied the allegations made by employees that the layoff is pandemic induced. “Changes in a customer’s business requirements and consequent realignment of the workforce impacted nine employees at our office in Bangladesh.  Any speculation that this decision was pandemic induced has no basis,” a Wipro spokesperson told The New Indian Express. The firm has around 200 employees in Bangladesh.

Wipro said that it is keeping all options open as a part of the cost-cutting exercise and is planning to send some of its staff on furloughs.

“We will have to cut costs wherever possible. These are tough times and we may have to take tough decisions,” President & Chief Human Resources Organisation Saurabh Govil had told TNIE.
