A 42-year-old Software Engineer from Indore reportedly lost 2.28lakh while ordering food online. The fraudster reached out to the victim as a customer care executive through phone and tricked him to share log in details.

While ordering food, Rupees 280 had been debited from the victim’s bank account for some previous transaction he did. To seek clarification and refund (in case if the deduction was a mistake), the victim contacted the Customer Support team of that payment gateway company.

Two days later, a man claiming to be a customer care executive, called the victim and assured to refund the deducted amount. Citing server issues, the man made the victim download a remote device control app . He then requested the victim to log in into the app and share the log in key before looting the money.

In recent times, several banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and State Bank of India have issued warning about this kind of scam in which the fraudsters gain access to the victims’ smart phone through remote control device apps.  Fraudsters will call victims as a bank employee and even verify personal details to build trust. They might scare the victims saying that their online banking will get blocked if they do not follow their instructions.
