The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced the commemoration of a new website, nonresidenttamil.org built in order to facilitate the transportation of those who are stuck in different countries and states, across the globe.

Since India has been under lockdown since March 25 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus infection, various states and international borders have been closed. This has raised some serious concerns as many people who are stuck in different countries have not been able to travel to their homes, located in Tamil Nadu.

This new initiative that has started today is likely to allow such stranded people to register themselves on the website. This way, the government will get to know the total number of people who wish to travel back to the state and their current places of residence. Authorities also need to assist facilities and get an approximate number of isolation beds which would be needed as they have to be made available for those who might return. If brought back they are likely to be kept in quarantine for 14 days.

In a statement, the government said, “International flights have been cancelled. Many Tamil citizens and students are stuck and are suffering without any way to reach Tamil Nadu.” It also said, “The website will help us know the total number of citizens who are stuck abroad and also prepare quarantine for those who return.”
