Last week Cyclone Gaja hit Tamil Nadu and etched its mark on the state. According to reports, over 45 lives were lost in TN due to the cyclone.

Among the many lives that were lost due to Cyclone Gaja, the death of a 14-year-old girl from Pudukottai was an event that could have been prevented. The young girl had just reached puberty and was made to stay in a makeshift hut in isolation.

According to customs, the girl had to stay in the hut until the completion of rituals. Due to the heavy rains, the girl's family planned to take her in after three days. However, on November 16, a coconut tree fell on the hut and hit the girl on her chest. By the time she was found and taken to the hospital, the girl died.
