Taking a cab to the Chennai airport is set to get costlier in a month as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to charge Rs. 60 as access fee for entry of commercial vehicles. However, entry for private cars will remain free.

Parking rates at the airport have also been cut. You will no longer have to pay Rs. 110 if you don't leave the airport within 10 minutes of entering. Call taxis and other cab operators can be expected to charge passengers the Rs.60 that they will have to pay for entering the airport.

The decision comes after it was found that because of the 10 minute free time, cabs kept driving in and out, idling at different places in the airport area, waiting for customers.

This new system will be in place in a month, said airport director G Chandramouli. "The access fee is kept higher as per the new parking policy to encourage vehicles to park. If they are found to create congestion, some action would be taken. A challan will be issue and wheel jammers will be used. If the vehicle is found to obstruct the flow of cars, it will also be towed away," Chandramouli told Times of India.

As per the new parking policy, for the first 30 minutes, Chennai airport will charge Rs. 50 for coaches or buses, Rs. 40 for cars, and Rs. 20 for two-wheelers. For the next 120 minutes, it will charge Rs. 110 for coaches, buses and SUVs, Rs. 100 for cars, and Rs.25 for two-wheelers. These improved rates are inclusive of GST and other taxes.
