A recent notification issued by the state government of Tamil Nadu says that one can now land in jail for paying your domestic help less than Rs 37 per hour, as part of the Palaniswami dispensation's labour reforms aimed at setting guidelines for the unorganised sector that includes the likes of domestic servants, home nurses and semi-skilled help.
Tamil Nadu has fixed Rs 37 as the minimum hourly wage for 'unskilled' domestic workers while its Rs 39 for skilled workers including home nurses and Rs 38 for semi-skilled helps such as cooks and gardeners.
Media reports say that the rates have been set for an entire eight-hour day's chores including sweeping, mopping the floor, washing utensils and clothes along with babysitting.
