Tamil Nadu Govt Change Names of 1018 Places to Tamil!
Home > News Shots > Tamil Nadu newsThe government of Tamil Nadu has changed the names of various places, in order to ensure that their English pronunciations and spellings match the Tamil pronunciations.
This was notified as a recommendation of an experts committee. Almost 1,018 places’ names have been altered. Collectors are expected to take the necessary steps for changing the names of the places as per the prescribed alteration, with the help of local bodies concerned.
Some of the changed names are:

Vellore - Veeloor
Tondiyarpet – Thandayiyaarpettai
Purasawalkam – Purasaivaakkam
VOC Nagar - Va.OO.Si. Nagar
Chintadripet - Chintadaripettai
Vepery - Vepperi
Perambur – Peramboor
Mylapore - Mayilaappoor
Kodungaiyur - Kodungaiyoor
Peravallur - Peravalloor
Siruvallur - Siruvalloor
Konnur - Konnoor
Koyembedu - Koyambedu
Egmore – Ezhumboor
Saidapet – Saithaappettai
Poonamallee - Poovirunthavalli
Triplicane - Thiruvallikkeni
Thiruvanmiyur - Thiruvanmiyoor
Mambalam - Maambalam

The changed names were issued on April 1. However, the government released it for public view only on Wednesday.
