The horticulture department has announced that it will start distributing fruits and vegetables in five locations of the city from Thursday in order to avoid people from facing shortage.

The decision was taken by a senior official on Wednesday in view of the vegetable and fruits shortage in the city caused due to the shutdown of Koyambedu market. Trucks with vegetables and fruits have stopped arriving at the market since Tuesday.

This has increased the demand for vegetables. Reportedly, several retail vendors have stocked up few vegetables like tomatoes, onions and potatoes that are always in demand and have hiked the prices of the same. According to media reports, customers said that the prices had peaked by Wednesday afternoon.

“On Thursday, the department will get 500 tonnes of vegetables- onions and tomatoes from Bengaluru and Krishnagiri, greens, brinjal, bhindi and bitter gourd form Kancheepuram, chengalpet, vellore, thiruvannnamalai and Villupuram districts,” Times of India cited in its report.

As per officials’ statements, this is an effort to reduce the demand and cater to a sizeable population in the city.
