Animal welfare organisation, People For Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India have announced the 'Most Vegan-Friendly City of 2018'. This year, the honour has been bagged by the Southern city of Chennai.

The city was honoured for providing an environment in which vegan-friendly establishments can thrive. PETA India sent a letter to Chennai Corporation Commissioner, Dr D. Karthikeyan thanking him for promoting more environment-friendly practices.

"This is the third year that we are giving out this award. Bengaluru won the award in the first year while Pune received it last year," Times of India quoted a PETA officer as saying.

A PETA India spokesperson told Times of India that Chennai was a natural choice for this award and there has been an increase in the number of Vegan businesses and restaurants in the city. Many companies too had come with vegetarian products and many organise vegan potlucks regularly.

Vegan-friendly eateries and shops are gaining popularity in the city, where groups of people from 'Tamil Vegan Movement' and 'Vegans of Chennai' can be found.

"Global interest in the vegan lifestyle has never been higher, and Chennai is leading the country in responding to it," PETA India CEO Dr Manilal Valliyate was quoted as saying.
