Backing its rule of ensuring that even pillion riders need to wear compulsory helmets in Tamil Nadu, the state government in a release on Monday said that as many as 7,526 people, including 2,476 two-wheeler riders, were killed in road accidents in the state till July this year. 

Two-wheelers were involved in 15,601 accidents and accounting for 40.53% of the total accidents, says a TOI report. Of these, 1,811 people, riding two-wheelers without helmets, died after sustaining grievous head injuries and accounted for 73.14% of motorists killed in fatal accidents, said the release from the state government.
