Chennai is one of the most affected areas in Tamil Nadu. It accounts for over half of the total number of cases reported in TN. The reason behind rise in number of cases or primary source could be traced back to two incidents. In April, the city saw a spike in number of cases after testingthe Tablighi Jamaat attendees and now Koyambedu market has emerged as a corona cluster that is transmitting the virus to other districts.

North Chennai has been one of the worst-hit areas since the beginning of the pandemic. There are 155 containment areas in North Chennai.

These are the areas that are under the radar in North Chennai:

- Neighbourhoods in Royapuram where almost 12-13 cases were reported in few streets.

- Thiruvottiyur, which initially reported cases through Tablighi Jamaat attendees.

- Madhavaram where couple of milk workers tested positive.

- Areas such as Ambattur, Mogappair and Padi Kuppam where number of cases have been surging recently.

Central Chennai has around 149 containment areas. Central Chennai did not initially record as many cases as North Chennai but now it has gone up due to Koyambedu Market.

These are the zones in Central Chennai that have been under the radar:

Thiru VI ka Nagar since the very beginning has recorded a high number of cases. The Primary source could be traced back to a single source event. According to PN Sridhar, Regional Deputy Commissioner (RDC), Central Chennai, Mothilal Street and Thattakulam are the streets with most number of cases reported.

- Kodambakkam has been reporting a high number of cases since Koyambedu became a coronavirus cluster. The market and its adjoining areas have seen a surge in number of cases. Even adjoining zones such as Anna Nagar and Valasaravakkam (South Chennai) have seen a spike in cases due to spread from Koyambedu market.

- Teynampet, another zone in central Chennai saw a sudden rise in number of cases which was attributed to a social worker who had distributed food to those in the area. VR Pillai Street in this area has registered 42 cases.
