He questioned on his tweet, whether people would be jailed for exposing the truth that doctors and many people are not getting food in Coimbatore. “Putting someone behind the bars for speaking the truth is dictatorship”, the translation of the tweet read.
He further went on to say that press, being the fourth estate of our democracy, should not be suppressed. He demanded the release of the publisher who was arrested.
The tweet comes as a response to the arrest made against the Managing director cum publisher of a Coimbatore- based online news portal on Thursday. He was arrested on the charges of allegedly publishing mischievous content.
According to report from The New Indian Express, the 39-year-old publisher was arrested by the RS Puram police after receiving a complaint from M Sundarrajan, the Assistant Commissioner of Coimbatore Municipal Corporation earlier in the day.
He was arrested and booked under section 3 of Epidemic Disease Act, 1897, 505 (j) (b) of the Indian Penal Code (statement conducing public mischief) and section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).
The opposition DMK also condemned and slammed the move on Thursday.
