On Wednesday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had sent an SOS to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, TN CM Edappadi Palaniswami and Home Minister Rajnath Singh requesting water to be released from Mullaperiyar Dam.

Vijayan pointed out the rising levels of water in the dam and asked for water to be released. Responding to Vijayan's SOS, CM Palaniswami on Thursday asserted that there is no need to reduce the water levels in Mullaperiyar Dam. He reportedly stated that the dam is more than capable in the current condition.

TN's stand is based on the Supreme Court's verdict in 2014 allowing the state to store water up to 142 feet.
