A new set of hotspots have emerged in Chennai city. In the past few days, a surge of coronavirus infections have been reported in a few areas which were previously reporting less cases.
Previous hotspots such as Tondiarpet, and Royapuram are only representing 6 and 8 per cent of cases respectively. However, the new hotspots of Chennai are areas such as Ambattur, Kodambakkam, Sholinganallur, Adayar, Alandur, and Valasaravakkam.
Among the aforementioned new hotspots, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Adayar and Sholinganallur are reporting a 3 per cent surge in the total number of new active cases while the rest of the city is reporting 0.5 per cent surge.
“It is hard to identify the source anymore. If a person is positive, we barricade their houses and ask primary contacts to be in isolation,’’ an official with Ambattur zone said.
“We can’t really say why there’s a rise. People travel between zones for work. Contact tracing is still rigorous so the spike will come down soon,’’ the official added. Currently, six corporation zones have active cases which are exceeding 1,000. Kodambakkam is among them with 1,970 cases, which is the highest in Chennai.
