Kamalathal, an 85-year-old, commonly known among the locals as ‘Idli Amma’ or ‘Idli Paati’ is known for her business motive, which is to provide nutritious meals at a subsidised price. She sells one Idli, with Sambar and Chutney for just 1 rupee. By way of feeding the poor migrants during this difficult time, Kamalathal has been receiving tremendous love and support from the general public. The Quint reported that she has been receiving raw materials from people, so she can continue selling idlies for just 1 rupee. Kamalathal has also said that many migrant workers have joined her to help her prepare the meals.
Kamalathal told India Today, "The situation has been a little difficult since corona started but I have been trying my best to provide the idli at 1 rupee. I won't raise the price of my idli. There is an increase in the price of every commodity. There are more people coming. Many migrant labourers are stuck here and so there are more people coming. There are people who are coming and helping me. They are providing essentials and I am using that to make 1 rupee idlis."
She has been in the business for more than 30 years, and her determination to feed the poor with her food has been persistent.
