A 23-year-old girl died in an accident near Pallikaranai in Chennai after an ‘illegal banner’ fell on her.

The banner was installed by an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) functionary for a function. Reportedly, it fell on the victim identified as Subhashree when she was walking on the road. As soon as she fell to the road being hit by the banner, a lorry ran over her. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

In 2017, the Madras High Court issued an order banning all kinds of banners, hoardings and advertisements on all major signals in Tamil Nadu. During judgement the court read that these materials pose inconveniences for the comman man and can cause accidents on roads. However, the political parties and their supporters do not seem to stop the act despite several warnings by the court.

Its high time people understand that a banner installed in a wrong location for any reason might end up taking away the life and dreams of others.
