Chennai: Bike Accident along Marina Beach,19-year-old youth dies
Home > News Shots > Tamil Nadu newsBike racing are on the rise and traffic cops are unable to manage the youth in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai city. In a shocking case, a 19-year-old youth lost his life after the bike’s handlebar hit against a bus on Kamarajar Salai along the Marina Beach.
According to Times of India (ToI) report, youth who died has been identified as R Shanthakumar, 19, a B.Com student who was riding pillion on, when the bike grazed the bus, Shanthakumar fell to the ground. Neither he nor his friend was wearing a helmet. Meanwhile, his friend, 19-year-old Balaji, who was riding the bike, escaped with injuries and has been admitted to the Tamil Nadu Government Multi-Super-Speciality Hospital. Police have traced the MTC bus involved in the accident but yet to locate the driver.
Media reports say that, Shanthakumar, along with seven other friends, were on their way to play cricket on Marina and were travelling on four bikes. At around 6.30 am, Balaji overtook an auto rickshaw near the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose statue and the motorbike’s handlebar hit an MTC bus which was coming from the opposite direction.
Traffic police personnel told ToI that they are short-staffed to control this menace and could do with some help from the law and order police.
On Saturday night, following videos taken by pedestrians which showed several bikers weaving through traffic and performing dangerous stunts, the police swung into action and confiscated 25 two-wheelers and registered 174 cases of speeding, drunk driving, riding triples and helmet-less driving, the ToI further reports.
