The 14th league match of the IPL series was played at the Pune ground yesterday. The Mumbai Indians, led by Rohit Sharma, and the Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Shreyas Iyer, clashed. Kolkata won the toss and elected to field.
Batting first, Mumbai scored 161 for 4 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav top-scored with 52 and Tilak Varma with 38. Pat Cummins took 2 wickets for Kolkata while Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy took 1 wicket each.
Batting next, Kolkata won by 162 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 16 overs. Pat Cummins top-scored with 56 off 15 balls (4 fours and 6 sixes), while Venkatesh Iyer was unbeaten on 50 off 41 balls (6 fours and 1 six).
Speaking on the loss after the match, Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma said, "Never expected him to come and play like that [on Cummins]. Lot of credit. The pitch got better and better to bat as the game went on. It was holding up initially. Overall it was a good pitch.
With the bat we did not start well, in the last 4-5 overs to get 70+ was a great effort from the batting unit. We did not bowl according to the plan. We had the game till the 15th over, but then Cummins was brilliant. Whenever you have runs on the board, we always have the upper hand, We had them 5-down, it was just a matter of the wicket of Venky or Pat, they had Sunil who could smash them. This will be hard to digest, the way it turned out in the last few overs. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us. I don't want to be in this position all the time [frustrated smile]," Rohit signed off.
