Shreyas Iyer wants to emulate Rohit Sharma!!!
Home > News Shots > Sports newsShreyas Iyer has always been identified as a supreme talent and has been watched at very carefully as a long term Indian Player for a while.
Shreyas Iyer first came into the scene in the 2014 Under-19 Worldcup where he got back to back fifties to help India finish 5th in the tournament.
Making his Ranji Debut in the 2014 season, he scored 809 runs at an average of 50.56 and turned out to be the 7th highest runscorer of that season. The next year was his breakout season as he scored 1321 runs at an average of 73.39 becoming the highest scorer of that season and also took Mumbai to their 41st Ranji trophy title.
In the same year, 2015, he got picked by for the Delhi Daredevils, now called as the Delhi Capitals for 2.6 crores which was the highest for an uncapped player in that season. He repaid very well scoring 439 runs opening the batting.
Following his consistent performances across formats, he got his India call-up in 2017. He didn't perform as well as he would have liked in the T20 format but had a good home series against Srilanka where he scored 162 runs in 3 matches at an average of 54.00 and a strike rate of 101.25. However, he didn't have enough opportunities after that and was dropped from the squad eventually.
Since getting dropped he has worked on his game harder, particularly on his big hitting. In 2018, he was named vice-captain of Mumbai as he became the leading run scorer in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 373 runs in 7 matches. He was also leading runscorer in the Deodhar Trophy with 199 runs in 3 matches. He was in very good form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy this year, scoring 484 runs at an average of 60.50 and a strike rate of 152.20. He has also managed to score two hundred’s in the tournament including 147 runs from 55 balls which is the highest score by an Indian in T20 cricket.
Taking over the Captaincy midway in 2018 for the Delhi Capitals after Gambhir had stepped down, he has now been announced as the full-time captain for the Delhi Capitals. Taking over leadership for a franchise that has been struggling will be a tough job but will definitely help him get matured and improve as a player. He has said that Rohit Sharma is the player he looks up to since he took over the Mumbai Indians captaincy after Ponting had stepped down in similar circumstances and Rohit has managed to turn around the fortunes of Mumbai Indians as well as grow as a batsman.
This year, the Delhi Capitals have got off to a mixed start winning 3 matches out of 6, but Shreyas Iyer after getting good starts previously in the tournament has played a captains knock to get a victory against the RCB, scoring a brilliant 67 from 50 balls on a two-paced pitch. It is very critical for the inexperienced Delhi line up that he steps up and has a big season as captain.
This will also help push for national selections, as he is a very good player with leadership qualities, and if given an opportunity, is definitely a player who will take India a long way forward in the future.
