Akhtar played for KKR under Ganguly's captaincy and they have played in the same period for their respective countries who were deemed arch rivals. He has said that Ganguly transformed Indian cricket.
Ganguly became the captain of the team in 2000 when Indian cricket was involved in a match-fixing scandal. Akhtar said that he never felt India would be able to beat Pakistan until Ganguly became the captain.
He also said that Ganguly changed his teammates' mindset and laid the foundation for the team to dominate the game.
“One person that transformed Indian cricket was Sourav Ganguly, never felt before 97-98 that India could beat Pakistan. I never felt India had the system to beat Pakistan until Sourav Ganguly became the captain. Sourav Ganguly changed the mentality of Indian cricket. He had an eye to pick a talent to play for India,” said Shoaib Akhtar in a video on his YouTube channel.
