IPL 2020 Not Happening in India! BCCI Official Hints On New Venue : Details
Home > News Shots > Sports newsThe much awaited 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which was all set to begin on March 29 is still to find a date on the calendar 2020. Since the first postponement, there have been multiple reports regarding the future of IPL 2020 but no confirmation has been given on it yet.
But in a recent conversation with IANS news agency, a BCCI official hinted that the IPL 2020 is moving out this year which means the 13th edition can be held in overseas conditions. The official has picked Sri Lanka and UAE as front-runners to host the tournament.
"We are yet to decide on the venue but in all probability, it is going outside this year. The condition in India doesn't look suited to have so many teams come in at one or two venues and then create an atmosphere which will be safe for the players as well as the general public even though the games may be played behind closed doors,” the official told IANS.
Meanwhile, reports also state that BCCI is waiting for an official word on the T20 World Cup, only then a final decision regarding IPL 2020 will take place.
"The race is between UAE and Sri Lanka and we will need to decide on where we host the league depending on the situation there with regards to the coronavirus pandemic. Logistics also need to be looked into, so we will decide soon," he added.
Till date, ICC has conducted a number of meetings but a final word regarding the T20 World Cup is yet to take place. The board is expected to announce its final decision in the third week of July, Times Now reported.
As the number of positive COVID-19 cases are on the rise in the country, the board is keeping all options open to move IPL outside India. With this decision, BCCI will suffer a loss of Rs 4,000 crore.
