NZvsIND: Virat Kohli's Team India Breaks 31-Year-Old Record; Bumrah Stands OUT!
Home > News Shots > Sports newsAfter winning the T20 series by 5-0, Virat Kohli led Team India could not keep up the form in the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand. India lost the first 2 ODIs against New Zealand and looked forward to a complimentary win in the final ODI which failed terribly. In the 3rd ODI at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zeland won the toss and decided to bowl first against the tourists.
India managed to put a total of 296 on the scoreboard with wicketkeeper Lokesh Rahul scoring the maximum of 112 in 113 balls. India lost 7 wickets and only three batsmen scored double-digit runs apart from Lokesh Rahul - Prithvi Shaw (40), Shreyas Iyer (62) and Manish Pandey (42).
While the fans taught it was a defendable target, the kiwis had other ideas which they executed with the flawless batting order. New Zeland showcased collective team effort to chase down the target within 48 overs. Both the openers - Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls- scored 66 and 88 respectively. Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Jimmy Neesham scored only 22, 12 and 19 respectively.
The unbeaten partnership between wicketkeeper Tom Latham (32) and Colin de Grandhommie (58) led New Zealand to 300 runs in 47.1 overs, thus making them clean sweep the series by 3-0. Reportedly this is the first bilateral ODI series in which Virat Kohli scored least runs as captain. The most anticipated Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah conceded 167 runs in 3 ODIs without picking up a single wicket. Statistically, this is the first bilateral ODI series in which Bumrah did not pick a single wicket in his career.
According to the India Today report, the Virat Kohli led Team India faced the first whitewash in a bilateral ODI series of 3 or more matches after 31 years. The last time was in West Indies (1989) where Team India was whitewashed by 5-0.
