Gold-medal winning swimmer dies in a tragic road accident!
Home > News Shots > Sports newsSwimmer M.B. Balakrishnan, former 50m national record holder passed away in a tragic road accident on Tuesday night. He was riding a two-wheeler with a female friend accompanying him when he came in contact with a lorry and lost control, reports Times Now.
The lorry ran over him and he died on spot at EVR Salai. The female friend escaped unhurt. Balakrishnan held the record for the best performance in 50m backstroke at the 2010 Federation Cup. He was a gold medalist in the 50 and 100 metres during the 11th South Asian Games in Dhaka in 2010.
He was selected for Commonwealth games in 2010 but he was attacked and severely injured by some unidentified persons. He was working in the USA and had come home for vacation where he was killed in the accident.
His body was sent to Government Kilpauk Hospital for post mortem. Lorry driver Subramanian (32) of Villupuram was detained by police. Police said the accident was recorded in a CCTV camera at the spot.
