World Cup DRAMA: Former CSK player attacks ICC; Calls it a “JOKE”
Home > News Shots > Sports newsThe history of ICC World Cup had first of its kind nail-biting final match on July 14 (Yesterday) at Lords, London which is popularly celebrated as ‘Mecca of Cricket’. The match between England and New Zealand turned up to Super Over and made the cricket fans around the globe glued to their seats until the last ball of the Super Over.
Earlier in the 50th over of England’s innings, Martin Guptill’s throw from the deep happened to hit Ben Stokes’s bat before running for the boundary. The extra 4 runs brought England back into the game while they already lost 9 wickets. Finally, England managed to score 241 runs and match tied.
New Zealand had put all their efforts which could be no lesser than England’s brilliant play on the field. However, the face of misfortune grabbed the Kiwis in the form of the ICC set of rules. In the Super Over, England was put to bat first and scored 15 runs. Trent Boult who bowled the 50th over for England continued to bowl the Super Over while Jos Butler and Ben Stokes took turns at the crease.
For New Zealand, England seamer Jofra Archer bowled the Super Over and the very first ball happened to be wide. In the next 5 balls, New Zealand scored 14 runs. New Zealand needed 2 runs to win in the last ball. New Zealand's Martin Guptill hit the ball in front of deep square and Jason Roy was quick enough to collect the ball. Before Guptil could reach the crease for the second run, Jos Butler collected the ball and toppled the stumps.
The Super Over also tied but England won the historical World Cup game since they scored more boundaries than New Zealand as per the norms of ICC. Former CSK player and New Zealand allrounder Scott Styris couldn't believe the series of twists and turns which finally favoured England. He took to his twitter space and said, “Nice work @ICC ... you are a joke!!!”
Not Just Scott but the match triggered a lot of cricket fans on social media. However, after a while, Scott Styris congratulated both the teams by referring to them as “two champion teams”.
