They were the first recipients of prestigious awards for 2019. The award was jointly awarded to two Americans and a British scientist.
The three scientist have been identified as William G. Kaelin Jr, Gregg L. Semenza and Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe, for their unique discoveries of “how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability”.
This news went viral after official Twitter handle of The Nobel Prize took to social media and tweeted saying "Oxygen sensing is central to a large number of diseases. The discoveries made by this year’s Nobel Prize laureates have fundamental importance for physiology and have paved the way for promising new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and many other diseases."
According to Indian Express report, this is the 110th prize in the category that has been awarded since 1901.
Meanwhile, the Karolinska Institutet, which awards the Nobel Prize for Medicine, stated that the three winners will equally share the 9 million kronor (918,000 US Dollars) cash award.
