Breaking: Former Indian cricketer jailed for 1 year - here's why!

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has been sentenced by the Supreme Court to one year in prison.

Navjot Singh Sidhu was born on October 20, 1963 and is a former member of the Indian cricket team. He has played in 51 Tests and 136 ODIs. Sidhu, who started playing in international tournaments in 1983, is known by his fans as Sixer Sidhu. Sidhu was last charged with murder in 1988.

Case

On December 27, 1988, Gurnam Singh was reported to have died as a result of Sidhu's assault. On September 22, 1999, a Sessions Court judge in Patiala acquitted Sidhu and his friend on the grounds that they were unsubstantiated and suspicious.

The victim's family subsequently appealed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2006 against the verdict. Sidhu was sentenced to 3 years in prison in this case. However, Sidhu had appealed to the Supreme Court against this. Sidhu then petitioned the court to commute the sentence.

Penalty

The bench, comprising Justices AM Konwilkar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, sentenced Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year in jail in the case, which has been pending for nearly 34 years.
