A 28-year-old woman, who had undergone a uterus transplant, gave birth to a baby girl at a private hospital in Pune. The doctors responsible for treating her claimed that this was the first of its kind case in the country.

Meenakshi Walan, a resident of Vadodara, underwent a uterus transplant in May 2017. Walan's mother donated her uterus to her daughter as Walan's uterus had become non-functional after a miscarriage, said one of the doctors.

After successful completion of the transplant surgery, Walan conceived through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) method. Walan delivered a baby girl at the Galaxy Care Hospital, where she had earlier undergone the transplant.

Dr. Neeta Warty, one of the doctors who oversaw the delivery, claimed that this was the first of its kind delivery not only in India, but in the "Asia-Pacific region".
