The Twitter account of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal website as well as mobile app was hacked early on Thursday morning. Twitter officially confirmed that his account has been hacked and informed that steps are being taken to secure the compromised account and that the social media giant is “actively investigating” the situation.

The account had reportedly sent out tweets imploring people to donate to the PM National Relief Fund through cryptocurrency. The account has around 2.5 million followers. Over 37,000 tweets have been made from the account ever since it was created in May 2011. The handle officially goes by the name of narendramodi_in

"We're aware of this activity and have taken steps to secure the compromised account. We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted," a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement.

The last tweet posted via the account was on August 31. The tweet contained PM Modi’s quote from his monthly radio programme “Mann ki Baat”

Earlier, the accounts of several prominent personalities such as Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama, Tesla owner Elon Musk and Microsoft co- founder Bill Gates were hacked in July.
