After days of suspense, Rahul Gandhi announced his resignation and shared his resignation letter in a tweet on Wednesday. Gandhi took responsibility for Congress' defeat in Lok Sabha and said that he would continue to fight the ideology of BJP.

He clarified that he quit his position because he held himself responsible for the party's defeat in the polls. "As President of the Congress party, I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party," Gandhi wrote in the letter.

He said that he had "no hatred or anger" towards the BJP, he said, "But every living cell in my body instinctively resists their idea of India."

The bio on his official Twitter handle has been changed from "President of Indian National Congress" to "Member of Indian National Congress." He also asked the working committee to elect a new president without further delay.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi had met all the party chief ministers - Gehlot, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath, Puducherry CM V Narayansamy and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel.

Despite the party members protesting, Rahul had taken the decision to step down.

Considering Congress is an age-old party being managed by the Nehru family line, a member of the family stepping down from the president position is a major incident for the party.

Amid this, who will take over as Congress president is still not revealed yet. Congress might get its first non-Gandhi president in 21 years. The new president would be expected to reconstruct the party with the help of senior leaders.
