After successfully implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the central government has shifted its focus to the National Population Registry (NPR). Today, the Union Cabinet has approved funds to the tune of over Rs 8,500 crore for updating the NPR.
What is the purpose of NPR?
The main purpose of NPR is to collect the information of "usual residents" who resided in a local area for the past 6 months or more or the person who wishes to reside in the area for the next 6 months or more.
According to the website of the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, it has been decided to update the National Population Register along with the Houselisting phase of Census 2021 during April to September 2020 in all the states/UTs except Assam.
NPR Database
Once NPR database is updated, it will contain all your information including Adhar, Passport, PAN, Voter ID, Driving License and Mobile number etc. according to multiple media reports. All the residents may be issued a Resident ID Card.
