Nirbhaya Convicts Not to be HANGED tomorrow? Execution DELAYED?
Home > News Shots > India newsIn what comes across as a heart-breaking news for the family of Nirbhaya – the convicts in the case, Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta – will not be hanged tomorrow, February 1, 2020, after a Delhi court ordered a stay on the execution until further notice, reports The Quint.
Speaking to the media after the court order, Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi was quoted as saying, “The lawyer of the convicts, AP Singh has challenged me saying that the convicts will never be executed. I will continue my fight. The government will have to execute the convicts.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to write, “It saddens me that convicts in Nirbhaya case are escaping death sentence by using legal loopholes.”
A 23-year-old physiotherapy student was violently gangraped in 2012 in a moving bus in Delhi by six men. She died of extensive injuries 13 days later at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital. One of the convicts, Ram Singh, committed suicide in 2013 in jail whereas a minor accused was given a maximum punishment of three years as per the Juvenile Justice laws.
