Following Anant Chaturdashi on Sunday, Ganesha idol immersion ceremonies ended on Monday afternoon. Anant Chaturdashi is the final day of the 11-day festival of the Ganesh Chaturthi that began on September 13.

Thousands of idols were taken in procession to be immersed into the sea or rivers, lakes, ponds and wells. Shockingly, during the immersion ceremonies in Maharashtra over 18 lives were lost, mostly due to drowning. Another 17 people were seriously injured after a large idol fell on them.

On Saturday, two youths from Tamil Nadu died while trying to immerse Ganesh idols. The duo reportedly slipped and fell inside the water.
