The bomb squad is an integral part of the defense sector. People who work in the bomb disposal squad put their lives at grave risk whenever their services are availed. 100% bomb defusion is never ensured therefore, it is imperative to protect as many lives as possible.

In a welcome move, the Mumbai Police has availed the services of a hi-tech robot known as Mini Remotely Operated Vehicle (MROV), Rover Mark. The robot which has been made in India will help in minimisation of damages due to explosions.

According to reports, the robot costs around Rs 84 lakhs and is an addition to the Mumbai police force. The robot can climb mountains, stairs, aircraft and ladders at 45 degrees. It can be installed inside buildings and it has shown positive results during monsoon season as well. The climatic feature seems pretty useful given that Mumbai is water clogged half the time during the year.

The decision was taken in the wake of the deadly 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, in which 166 people lost their lives and several others seriously injured.

Extensive tests were conducted in the past few months and now three of such robots which weigh around 100 kgs have been inducted into the system. The robot has been built by the Security Defence System (SDC).

As per a Times Now report, the robot is fully remote-controlled and can pass directions using the camera installed within a range of 100 to 200 metres. The robot can also be used from a range of 1 km when the suspect article is in an open ground and there is no obstacle in front of it.

One of its most important features is that it can destroy bombs with fire. However, if an article is located in confined spaces so the officers have the option of extending the length of the robot’s arms whose claws can reach the narrow space to defuse the bombs.

The robots not only have the capacity to attach Real-Time Viewing System (RTVS) which can scan suspected articles inside bags using the main control machine but it is also equipped with a night vision feature and controlling joystick.
