In an unfortunate event, an Air India Express flight which was ferrying Stranded Indians from Dubai to Kerala overshot the runaway at the tabletop Kozhikode airport. The incident happened on Friday evening causing the flight to split into two pieces after falling off into the valley.

Pilot Deepak Vasant Sathe from Indian Air Force and Air India veteran died on the spot.

According to data released by Civil Aviation Ministry, the flight had 174 passengers, 10 infants, 2 pilots and 5 cabin crew members on board. More than 16 people are dead, 13 are critically injured and around 123 people have suffered injuries.

The flight was commuting passengers as a part of the Vande Bharatam Mission. The flight was scheduled to land at the Karipur airport but heavy rainfall led to low visibility in the hilly regions of Kerala and made it very difficult for the pilots to find a perfect landing

“Aircraft-tracking system ‘Flightracker’ showed that the pilots had attempted to land the aircraft a second time and came back in a ‘figure 8’ track. Unfortunately, when the flight was landing, the visibility on the runway was around 2,000 metres, which is alarmingly low for an inbound aircraft in such topography,” Times Now reported.

“After landing on Runway 10, the aircraft skid further towards the tip of the runway and fell off the cliff into the valley, splitting into two parts. It was a miracle that the aircraft didn’t burst into flames,” the media report added.

The Air India Express Dubai- Kozhikode IX- 1344 had 191 people on board in total. The unfortunate event took place around 07:41pm. According to media reports, the impact of the crash was very bad causing damage to the front door of the aircraft and cockpit.
